Illustrative Tattoos in Vancouver
An illustrative tattoo is a hand-drawn, story-driven style that sits somewhere between a fine art sketch and a painting. If you want a tattoo that feels like a scene lifted from a book, a graphic novel, or a dream you had once, this is it. At The Hyve Tattoo Studio, our artists bring custom illustrative tattoo work to clients across Greater Vancouver, building pieces that are personal, detailed, and made to last.
What Is an Illustrative Tattoo
Who Gets Illustrative Tattoo
Have a concept in mind
a scene, a character, a symbol, a moment, and you want it rendered with personality rather than hyper-realism
You're building a collection
and want a piece with a distinct aesthetic identity that stands apart from your other work
It's your first tattoo
you want something hand-crafted and original rather than pulled from a flash sheet
Your imagery is hard to execute in other styles
storybook animals, botanical work, character portraits, abstract figures, or anything with a graphic-novel quality.
What to Expect
The linework does a lot of heavy lifting
It ages well

Your Illustrative Tattoo Journey
at The Hyve Tattoo Studio

Step 1. Reach out and book a consultation
Fill in our booking form. Tell us a bit about what you have in mind; even a rough description helps. We'll match you with the right artist.

Step 2. The consultation
This is where the actual design work begins. You bring your references, your ideas, and your questions. The artist listens, asks the right questions, and starts building the concept. There's no rush.

Step 3. Design review
Before your session, you'll review the design. We refine it until you're happy. You'll never be handed a stencil on the day without having seen it first.

Step 4. The session
Sessions vary in length depending on the complexity of the piece. Smaller illustrative work might be done in two to three hours. Larger compositions take longer, sometimes across multiple sessions. Your artist will walk you through what to expect before you sit down.

Step 5. Healing and aftercare
We'll give you clear aftercare instructions. Illustrative tattoos with solid linework tend to heal predictably, but following the care guidance matters for the result.
Why Book Your Illustrative Tattoo at The Hyve Tattoo Studio
The Hyve is a Fraser Health Board-approved studio in New Westminster, which means we meet the health and safety standards set by the regional health authority. The studio was founded in 2022 by Bien and Bri, with Bien tattooing since 2016 after a self-taught path that started from scratch. That background shapes how the team approaches every piece: with patience, care, and no ego.
We have five resident artists covering a wide range of styles. For illustrative work specifically, our artists bring experience in fineline tattooing, greyscale, and illustrative as overlapping disciplines, which matters because the best illustrative tattoo artists understand line control and tonal range across multiple styles, not just one.
What Does an Illustrative Tattoo Cost?
Illustrative tattoo pricing at The Hyve is based on the size of the piece, the level of detail, and the session time required. A small illustrative tattoo, single subject, minimal background, will typically take two to three hours. A larger, more complex composition with background elements and fine detail will take more time across potentially more than one session.
We provide transparent pricing at your consultation, once we’ve seen your concept and worked out the scope. No surprises.

I got my foot/leg tattoo done by Bri, and I couldn’t be happier with it! It’s such a beautiful piece, and I receive so many compliments on it. I brought her some inspiration ideas, and what she created was beyond anything I could have imagined—100% better than my original vision. Her talent, creativity, and attention to detail are incredible. I love it so much that I’m already thinking about turning it into a full leg sleeve! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What's the difference between an illustrative tattoo and a sketch tattoo?
Sketch tattoos are a specific sub-style within illustrative tattooing; they deliberately leave pencil-line aesthetics and looser edges as part of the design. Illustrative is the broader category. Not all illustrative tattoos look like sketches, but all sketch tattoos are illustrative in approach.
2. How long does an illustrative tattoo take to heal?
Most tattoos, illustrative included, go through the main healing phase in two to four weeks, with the deeper layers of skin settling over two to six months. Your artist will give you specific aftercare based on the size and placement of your piece.
3. Can I combine illustrative with another style, like fineline or greyscale?
Absolutely. Many of the best illustrative pieces blend approaches, fineline detailing within a broader illustrative composition, or greyscale shading on an illustrative figure, for example. This is something worth discussing during your consultation so the artist can plan the technique from the start.
4. Is an illustrative design a good choice for a first tattoo?
It depends on the complexity. A small, simple, illustrative piece is a great first tattoo: clean, personal, and distinctive. Larger or highly detailed illustrative work is better suited to someone who’s had at least one tattoo before and knows how their body responds to a session. Your artist will give you an honest read on what’s appropriate for your first experience.
5. How do I know if my idea suits an illustrative style?
If your concept involves a figure, a character, a botanical element, or any imagery you’d describe as “drawn” rather than “photographed,” illustrative is likely a strong fit. Bring references: screenshots, book illustrations, mood boards, and your artist will tell you what’s achievable and how to approach it.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Illustrative tattooing is built on expressive linework and hand-drawn aesthetics. It suits concepts that have a drawn, narrative, or character-based quality rather than photographic subjects.
Line weight variation and deliberate shading are what give illustrative pieces their depth. Ask your artist how they plan to handle both for your specific design.
Strong structural lines help illustrative tattoos age more clearly than some other styles, but placement matters; areas with high friction or sun exposure affect any tattoo's longevity.
The consultation is where the design is built from your references, so come with images, sketches, or even written descriptions. The more context you give, the better the outcome.
If you're comparing illustrative to fineline or greyscale, the key difference is in the visual weight and character of the lines; these styles can also be combined within a single piece.
