Shading that breathes life into 3D forms.
Lustrous Texture

Permanent Elegance
A classic aesthetic that ages gracefully and complements any style.
The Power of the Palette-less
Creating the perfect greyscale piece requires a keen eye for “values” the lightness or darkness of a colour. Our artists utilize a layered approach, starting with soft, buttery transitions and finishing with high-contrast black accents to ensure your tattoo remains crisp and readable for decades. Whether it’s a sprawling backpiece or a subtle forearm tribute, we treat every drop of ink with architectural precision.
Greyscale tattooing sits at the intersection of technical discipline and pure artistic instinct. The Hyve Tattoo Studio in New Westminster offers greyscale tattoos by experienced black and grey specialists who understand how shadow, contrast, and negative space work together to build something that lasts. Whether you are planning a detailed portrait, a large-scale nature composition, or a bold geometric piece, greyscale is a style that rewards the right artist and the right studio. This page covers everything you need to know before booking your greyscale tattoo in New Westminster.
What Makes a Great Greyscale Tattoo
At The Hyve, greyscale tattooing follows a layered approach soft transitions are built first, then high-contrast black accents are added last to lock in depth and ensure the piece reads clearly from a distance. This sequencing matters more than most clients realise. A greyscale tattoo that skips the midtone work looks dated within a few years. One that is built properly holds its clarity for decades.
The most commonly requested greyscale subjects at The Hyve include portraiture, Neo-Asian compositions in black and grey, botanical and floral work, wildlife and animal pieces, and large-scale back and sleeve designs. Greyscale also works exceptionally well as a foundation for cover-up work, where strong contrast can be used to conceal existing tattoos effectively.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Specialty: Large-scaled Neo -Traditional Asian (Japanese/Chinese) and Dragons
Based in Vancouver, BC, Phil is a dedicated tattoo artist specializing in large-scaled Neo-Traditional Asian tattoos, with a focus on Japanese and Chinese styles. Phil began his artistic journey at the tender age of 7, after a curious incident involving a new puppy, Jake, who chewed through the wires of his N64 and led to the demise of the Toshiba projector TV. With no other distractions, he picked up drawing as a hobby and continued to develop his skills over the years.
Although Phil never pursued a career in art initially, a pivotal moment came in 2016 following a breakup, when he made the life-changing decision to become a tattoo artist. His formal training began with an apprenticeship at a private studio, followed by further education at The Dutchman Studio. Despite forming strong connections with fellow artists his time there was cut short due to an unfortunate mentor mismatch.
Phil’s first year as a full-time tattoo artist was spent at a shop on Commercial Drive in 2022. His artistic journey also includes guest spots at Gold Hollow and Seven Eight in Toronto. Throughout his career, Phil has had the privilege of learning from an array of talented artists including John The Dutchman, Patrick O’Neil from Seven Eight, and Hector Valenzuela from Bushido Studios.
Phil draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources including anime, comic books, video games, and the rich folklore of Chinese and Japanese cultures, as well as movies. His approach to tattooing involves meticulous research and design creation, drawing from books, stories, and real-world references to craft detailed and meaningful art.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Specialty: Illustrative Realism, Fineline Floral, Large-scale Floral
Kia ora! Meet Payton, a talented tattoo artist born and raised in North Vancouver. With a rich artistic heritage, his entire father’s side of the family being 100% artists, Payton grew up in a creative environment that deeply influenced his path. His grandmother ran an art studio in West Vancouver in the 1970s, instilling a love for art that has been nurtured throughout his life.
Payton has been tattooing in studios for over 2 years having honed his skills through community teaching before joining The Hyve. His art style is primarily focused on fineline floral designs, often described as illustrative realism. While he enjoys crafting large-scale floral pieces, he also finds peace in incorporating animals, skulls, and organic elements into his work. Additionally, Payton has a passion for portraiture, especially micro pet portraits.
His design process is intuitive and straightforward, requiring a deep trust between him and his clients. Payton prefers to freehand floral designs, drawing the stencil directly onto the skin with markers. This approach removes any barriers between artist and canvas, allowing for a more personal and unique tattooing experience. He believes that each piece should be one-of-a-kind, crafted in direct connection with the client’s anatomy.
Payton embraces the philosophy that tattoos don’t need to have hidden meanings. If a design resonates with you, that emotional connection is meaningful enough. His artwork reflects this belief, celebrating the significance of personal expression through ink.
Inspired by nature and his experiences as a surfer, Payton channels a deep connection to the environment in his designs. He also draws influence from fashion, having previously modeled and enjoyed styling and sewing. This blend of interests often leads him to create tattoos inspired by runway shows, merging his artistic vision with the world of high fashion.
With his unique perspective and passion for art, Payton is dedicated to creating tattoos that not only enhance personal expression but also celebrate the beauty of nature and individuality.

What to Expect from Your Greyscale Tattoo Session in New Westminster
Greyscale tattoos generally take longer per session than colour work of equivalent size because the layering process requires building up tonal depth gradually. A smaller greyscale piece, a forearm design or a portrait, typically takes between two and four hours. Large-scale greyscale work such as a full sleeve or back piece will be broken into multiple sessions, usually spaced four to six weeks apart to allow the skin to heal fully between sessions.
The Hyve’s studio at 9 6th St in New Westminster is designed to reduce the anxiety that comes with longer sessions. The ambient lighting, the relaxed pace, and the fact that you are working with an artist who is genuinely invested in the outcome all make a difference when you are three hours into a detailed piece.
Walk-ins are welcome Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 6pm for smaller greyscale designs. For anything requiring custom design preparation or multiple sessions, booking in advance is recommended.
Greyscale tattoo aftercare, what black and grey needs
Greyscale tattoos are particularly sensitive to sun exposure during healing and in the years that follow. UV damage fades the midtones first, which collapses the tonal range that makes the piece work. Keeping a healed greyscale tattoo out of direct sun or using a high-SPF sunscreen on exposed pieces is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the quality of the work long-term.
During the healing period, the same principles apply as any tattoo: keep it clean, keep it moisturised, avoid soaking it in water, and do not pick at peeling skin. Full aftercare instructions are available at thehyvestudio.ca/tattoo-aftercare/.
Frequently asked questions, greyscale tattoos in New Westminster
1. How much does a greyscale tattoo cost in New Westminster?
Greyscale tattoo pricing at The Hyve starts from a minimum of $130 and runs at an hourly rate of $160 to $250 depending on the artist. Larger greyscale pieces, sleeves, back pieces, detailed portraits, are quoted individually based on complexity and estimated session time. Submit your concept at thehyvestudio.ca/bookings/ for an accurate quote.
2. Do greyscale tattoos age well?
Yes, when done correctly. A greyscale tattoo built with proper tonal layering and strong black anchors holds its structure well over time. The most common cause of premature fading is sun exposure on unprotected skin. Keeping the piece out of direct UV and moisturising regularly will preserve the contrast and clarity for many years.
3. Can greyscale cover up a coloured tattoo?
In many cases yes. Greyscale cover-up work is one of the more technically demanding applications of the style, the existing tattoo’s colour saturation needs to be assessed to determine whether the contrast of a black and grey design can effectively conceal it. The Hyve’s artists assess cover-up feasibility at consultation. Not all cover-ups are possible and outcomes are not guaranteed.
4. Is greyscale a good choice for a first tattoo?
Greyscale is an excellent choice for a first tattoo, particularly for clients who want something timeless and are drawn to a more understated aesthetic than colour work. Fineline greyscale and botanical black and grey are popular entry points. Walk-ins are welcome for smaller first pieces, visit The Hyve at 9 6th St, New Westminster, Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 6pm.
