  • Artist

    Specialty: Large-scaled Neo -Traditional Asian (Japanese/Chinese) and Dragons

    @phillarious

    Based in Vancouver, BC, Phil is a dedicated tattoo artist specializing in large-scaled Neo-Traditional Asian tattoos, with a focus on Japanese and Chinese styles. Phil began his artistic journey at the tender age of 7, after a curious incident involving a new puppy, Jake, who chewed through the wires of his N64 and led to the demise of the Toshiba projector TV. With no other distractions, he picked up drawing as a hobby and continued to develop his skills over the years.

    Although Phil never pursued a career in art initially, a pivotal moment came in 2016 following a breakup, when he made the life-changing decision to become a tattoo artist. His formal training began with an apprenticeship at a private studio, followed by further education at The Dutchman Studio. Despite forming strong connections with fellow artists his time there was cut short due to an unfortunate mentor mismatch.

    Phil’s first year as a full-time tattoo artist was spent at a shop on Commercial Drive in 2022. His artistic journey also includes guest spots at Gold Hollow and Seven Eight in Toronto. Throughout his career, Phil has had the privilege of learning from an array of talented artists including John The Dutchman, Patrick O'Neil from Seven Eight, and Hector Valenzuela from Bushido Studios.

    Phil draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources including anime, comic books, video games, and the rich folklore of Chinese and Japanese cultures, as well as movies. His approach to tattooing involves meticulous research and design creation, drawing from books, stories, and real-world references to craft detailed and meaningful art.

  • Artist

    Specialty: Shonen Anime, Nostalgia, Bold Blackwork.

    Dabbles in Chicano style.

    @penwithchristian

    Born and raised in East Vancouver, BC, Chris is an enthusiastic tattoo artist with a deep-rooted passion for shonen anime. The dynamic action scenes, compelling sound effects, and the pursuit of a character’s ninja way have always captured his imagination, reflecting his own journey in the world of tattooing. With nearly two years of experience set to mark early 2025, Chris began his apprenticeship at The Hyve Studio at the ripe age of 33, under the mentorship of Bien on August 2023, and graduated on June 2024.

    Chris’s path into tattooing was greatly influenced by the support of his wife, who encouraged him to follow his dreams, and the invaluable guidance from Bien and the incredible team at The Hyve Studios. His journey has been enriched by the many talented individuals he has met along the way, for which he is profoundly grateful.

    When working with clients, especially on larger scale pieces, Chris prioritizes detailed consultations to fully understand their vision. This collaborative approach helps ensure that the design fits well and incorporates essential elements, while also addressing any “No’s” or “necessities” the client may have. He finds immense joy in receiving creative freedom with instructions like “just cook! I trust you,” which he considers music to his ears.

    Chris believes that tattoo creation is a collaborative process. While he takes the lead in designing the piece, he views it as a partnership with his clients, ensuring that their vision is realized while staying true to his artistic style. His philosophy centers on making sure each tattoo reflects both the client’s desires and his own artistic integrity.

  • Artist

    Specialty: Illustrative Realism, Fineline Floral, Large-scale Floral

    @devils__haircut

    Kia ora! Meet Payton, a talented tattoo artist born and raised in North Vancouver. With a rich artistic heritage—his entire father’s side of the family being 100% artists—Payton grew up in a creative environment that deeply influenced his path. His grandmother ran an art studio in West Vancouver in the 1970s, instilling a love for art that has been nurtured throughout his life.

    Payton has been tattooing in studios for a year and a half, having honed his skills through community teaching before joining The Hyve. His art style is primarily focused on fineline floral designs, often described as illustrative realism. While he enjoys crafting large-scale floral pieces, he also finds peace in incorporating animals, skulls, and organic elements into his work. Additionally, Payton has a passion for portraiture, especially micro pet portraits.

    His design process is intuitive and straightforward, requiring a deep trust between him and his clients. Payton prefers to freehand floral designs, drawing the stencil directly onto the skin with markers. This approach removes any barriers between artist and canvas, allowing for a more personal and unique tattooing experience. He believes that each piece should be one-of-a-kind, crafted in direct connection with the client's anatomy.

    Payton embraces the philosophy that tattoos don’t need to have hidden meanings. If a design resonates with you, that emotional connection is meaningful enough. His artwork reflects this belief, celebrating the significance of personal expression through ink.

    Inspired by nature and his experiences as a surfer, Payton channels a deep connection to the environment in his designs. He also draws influence from fashion, having previously modeled and enjoyed styling and sewing. This blend of interests often leads him to create tattoos inspired by runway shows, merging his artistic vision with the world of high fashion.

    With his unique perspective and passion for art, Payton is dedicated to creating tattoos that not only enhance personal expression but also celebrate the beauty of nature and individuality.

    Meet Arielle, a passionate tattoo artist born and raised in beautiful British Columbia. Starting her tattoo journey in January 2024, she has been honing her craft under the mentorship of Bien since September 2023.

    Drawing has always been a significant part of Arielle's life. Influenced by her love for cartoons and anime from a young age, shows like Sailor Moon and Inuyasha inspired her to develop a distinctive style that embodies illustrative and anime-inspired artwork. Beyond the art itself, Arielle strives to make the entire tattoo experience enjoyable and memorable. She fosters a welcoming atmosphere by engaging in conversation, bonding over shared interests like games and anime, and making her clients feel comfortable throughout the process.

    With a keen eye for detail, Arielle loves incorporating pops of color, particularly black, grey, and red, into her work. She also enjoys creating brushwork Asian-style tattoos and drawing female portraits, drawing inspiration from anime, video games, and pop culture.
